The Normans prepare for a Holy War
All the Medieval
Adventurers and Knights of Christendom flocked to William's
holy banner!
Duke William was
the most renowned knight and military leader of his age! He
promised glory and wealth to all those who followed him, and
his righteous campaign, against England.
His army was
filled with the most chivalrous Knights of Continental Europe,
all were eager to save their souls by fighting at the Pope's
bidding! The Knights were also eager to signal their own valor
in a great Battle and eager to sample the plunder which
William had promised! The Knights could become rich, have a
great adventure and at the same time save their souls! It was
no wonder that William received such enthusiastic support!
Nevertheless the
Normans were the solid core of William's army, and Duke
William himself was the strongest, and fiercest Knight of them
all.
Throughout the spring and summer of 1066 the ports of
Normandy, Picardy, and Brittany were alive with invasion
preparations...
